Biloxi Shuckers News Release

PENSACOLA, FL - The Biloxi Shuckers (15-33) rallied for three runs in the ninth inning but came up short in a 5-3 defeat to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (29-20) on Tuesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

LHP Nick Bennett (L, 1-4) allowed just two hits in the ballgame, but one of them was a solo home run to Demetrius Sims in the bottom of the second, giving Pensacola a 1-0 lead.

Pensacola added two more to their lead in the fourth after a pair of lead off walks were driven in on a single up the middle by Nick Fortes, putting the Blue Wahoos up 3-0. Bennett would allow three runs over five innings of work, striking out three and walking three.

RHP Max Meyer (W, 4-1) didn't allow a runner to advance into scoring position, tossing six scoreless innings and surrendering just four hits and one walk while striking out six. It's the third scoreless start Meyer has made against Biloxi.

The Shuckers had an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. With RHP Josh Roberson (H,2) on, Cam Devanney drew a walk in front of Brice Turang, who doubled to left field, putting men on second and third. Luis Castro then worked a walk, loading the bases for Alexander Palma. Roberson departed and RHP Colton Hock (S, 11) came on and struck out Palma, leaving the bases full and preventing the Shuckers from scoring.

The Blue Wahoos struck for two more in the bottom of the eighth inning on a bases-loaded ground-rule double by Peyton Burdick, pushing their advantage to 5-0.

Biloxi mounted a comeback against Hock in the ninth inning. Chad Spanberger singled and David Fry followed with a ringing double off the right-field wall, his second hit of the night. Tristen Lutz drove in Spanberger and reached first safely on a fielding error by Devin Hairston, breaking up the shutout. Gabriel Garcia doubled in a run to make it 5-2, and Devanney hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Lutz, drawing the Shuckers within two at 5-3. Turang came to the plate as the tying run but lined out to left, ending the Shuckers' rally.

The Shuckers continue their six-game series against the Blue Wahoos on Wednesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium. RHP Jesus Castillo (0-2, 9.75) will take the mound for the Shuckers against Wahoos' RHP Edward Cabrera (0-0, 0.87) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9 and can be seen on MiLB.TV.
