Blue Wahoos and Biscuits Suspended in the 10th Tied 7-7
August 11, 2021 - Southern League (SL)
Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
The Blue Wahoos seemed well on their way to a series-opening victory on Tuesday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium before a bullpen disaster and mother nature struck. After the Blue Wahoos allowed five runs in the top of the ninth inning to allow the Montgomery Biscuits to tie the game at 7-7, a torrential downpour led to the suspension of the game in the 10th inning.
The two teams will resume the game on Wednesday at 5:00 PM with the regularly scheduled Festival of Crabzilla game beginning following the completion of the suspended game.
On Tuesday night, the Blue Wahoos received a stellar outing on the mound from Kyle Nicolas, who took a no-hitter into the 5th inning. Nicolas finished with five complete innings, one hit allowed, and eight strikeouts.
For Nicolas, it was his second outstanding outing at Blue Wahoos Stadium since his promotion from High-A Beloit. In his Pensacola debut on July 27 against Mississippi, he threw 5.0 no-hit innings with eight strikeoutss.
Offensively, JJ Bleday reached base five times, knocking a single and working four walks. Peyton Burdick remained on an offensive tear, knocking two hits and driving in a pair of runs. For Burdick, the game (when finished) will be his sixth multi-hit game in his last seven appearances.
Pensacola held a 7-2 lead in the ninth inning before the game unraveled. Andrew McInvale was the pitcher tabbed with finishing the game; however, the right hander immediately ran into trouble. The first five Biscuits that McInvale faced in the ninth all reached base safely. After a single and walk, Xavier Edwards dropped a base hit to make it 7-3.
After that, Niko Hulsizer hit a routine ground ball to second that was misplayed by Zack Kone, turning a would-be double play into a bases loaded situation with no outs for Montgomery. After another single and a sac fly, the Biscuits had pulled within a run at 7-6 with a runner on second. McInvale exited the game and was relieved by Colton Hock, who surrendered a game-tying RBI double to Austin Shenton to tie the game at 7-7. Hock then retired the next two batters to send the game into the ninth.
After Pensacola went down in order, the Wahoos took the field for the top of the 10th before heavy rain and lightining led to the suspension of the game.
