Blue Rocks Drop Third of Series against BlueClaws
May 19, 2022 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
The Wilmington Blue Rocks (18-15) dropped their first game to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws (12-22) 5-4 on Thursday, May 19.
The BlueClaws got the scoring started early as catcher Nick Matera doubled to bring in the first two runs of the game. This wouldn't be the last time that Blue Rocks starter Jake Irvin would run into trouble.
Irvin would have two runners on in the second but be able to come out of that inning unscathed. He ended his night after three innings as he gave up two runs, three hits, and two walks while also recording four strikeouts. Irvin also left the game in the position to be handed the loss, but his team's offense ensured that wouldn't happen.
In the bottom of the fourth, Wilmington got on the board after their catcher, Onix Vega, had a 2-RBI double of his own to tie the game.
The tie would be broken in the bottom of the fifth when the Blue Rocks had runners on third and first. Right fielder Ricardo Mendez would put down a sac bunt to bring in their first run of the game. The second run would come in when center fielder Jeremy Ydens had some heads up baserunning and scored from third after Jersey Shore committed a throwing error while trying to pick off left fielder, Yasel Antuna, at first.
The Blue Rocks went into the sixth up 4-2, but that is when relief pitcher Gilberto Chu gave up two home runs to tie the game once more.
This time, the BlueClaws would be the ones to break the tie in the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, first baseman Carlos De La Cruz would hit a ground ball to Wilmington second baseman Darren Baker. He would be unable to cleanly field the ball, committing an error and despite getting the throw off, was not in time, allowing another run to score.
This would be all the BlueClaws needed to take the game, their first of the series. The two clubs will face off in game four on Friday, May 20 at 6:35 p.m.
