Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Wilmington (12-11) fought off an early Winston-Salem (11-12) rally and pulled away late in a 10-5 win on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. The Dash cut an early 6-0 deficit down to two before the Blue Rocks scored four unanswered runs in the final two innings. Wilmington has now the first two games of this three-game series and will look to sweep Winston-Salem in the final on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Rocks took advantage of Winston-Salem miscues to plate three runs in the second inning. Dash starting pitcher Anthony Carter walked Jeff Bianchi and hit David Lough with a pitch to start the inning. One out later, Clint Robinson lined a two-run double into the left field corner. Later in the inning, Adrian Ortiz reached on an infield single and an error on the throw to first allowed Robinson to score from second base to give Wilmington a 3-0 lead.
The Blue Rocks doubled their advantage in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryan Eigsti and Adrian Ortiz connected on back-to-back RBI singles and Johnny Giavotella collected a run-scoring ground out to put Wilmington in front 6-0.
Winston-Salem rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth inning sparked by RBI singles from Salvador Sanchez, Adam Ricks and Dale Mollenhauer that trimmed their deficit to 6-4. But that would be as close as the Dash would get as Wilmington pulled away with three runs in the seventh inning. Ortiz, who finished with three hits, drilled a two-run single and Mike Moustakes added an RBI ground ball in the eighth to secure the Blue Rocks victory.
Wilmington starting pitcher Danny Duffy (3-1) was solid in limiting Winston-Salem to one run on four hits in five innings to earn the win. In his last start on April 26, which came against the Dash, Duffy gave up six runs, including three home runs in suffering his lone loss of the season. Blue Rocks reliever Kelvin Villa tossed the final four innings to garner his first save of the season.
Carter (2-2) suffered the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits in four innings of work. He did not register a strikeout and it was his shortest outing of the year.
These two teams will conclude this three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 1:35 p.m. The Dash will send RHP Charlie Shirek (3-0, 3.18) to the mound, while the Blue Rocks will counter with LHP Ray Liotta (1-1, 6.43).
The next home game for the Dash is on Friday, May 9th when they host the Potomac Nationals in the opener of a three-game series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
