Blue Rocks' Back-to-Back Walk-Off Wins Secure Series Victory
May 13, 2023 - South Atlantic League (SAL)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Coming off a walk-off victory Friday, the Blue Rocks struck in the bottom of the ninth once again in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones.
What began as a slow-moving affair saw little offense besides a two-run homerun from Cyclones catcher Drake Osborn in the second inning.
Both starting pitchers dealt exceptional performances. For Wilmington, Chance Huff went seven innings, struck out five, and allowed just two earned runs on two hits and two walks.
Brooklyn starter Tyler Stuart threw five scoreless innings, surrendering four hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Cyclones' 2-0 lead remained steadfast until the seventh inning when the scorching hot Jacob Young tied things up for the Blue Rocks. Following a two-out hit and subsequent walk, Young capitalized on the scoring chance by punching a single into right field. A run scored on the hit, but a throwing error from right fielder Stanley Consuegra allowed the runner from first to score and tie the game at 2.
The 2-2 tie lasted until the bottom frame of the ninth inning. Rocks centerfielder Jacob Young found himself on the brink of a career day, already having three hits and a walk with a chance to drive in the winning run from second with two outs.
Young smoked a line drive up the middle that scored Nick Shumpert from second, being surrounded and celebrated before he could reach second base himself. His 4-4 day marks the first time this year he did not record an out in a game. He contributed seven total bases and two RBIs to headline the Blue Rocks' second walk-off win in as many nights.
The Rocks take their fourth win of the series securing a victorious homestand. They play the final game of the series Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
