PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - A trio of Dunedin pitchers put on a dominant display in the Blue Jays' 3-1 win over the St. Lucie Mets on Wednesday at First Data Field.
Starter Joey Murray and relievers Jackson Rees and Brad Wilson combined for 15 strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
The 15 strikeouts were the most suffered by the Mets this season the two hits tied for their season low.
Dunedin registered 15 hits but only mustered three runs against the three Mets pitchers.
Kacy Clemens ripped a two-out, two-run double in the top of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie and put the Jays ahead for good, 3-1.
The Mets took a 1-0 lead just four batters into the home first inning. Murray struck out the first two batters he faced, but Carlos Cortes and Jeremy Vasquez hit back-to-back doubles to put the Mets in front.
Those doubles would be the only hits for the Mets. The only other Met to reach base the remainder of the game was Jacob Zanon, who reached on a two-out error in the seventh.
Vasquez's double extended his hitting streak to nine games.
Mets starter Kevin Smith pitched out of jams through most of his outing. He only gave up one run despite allowing nine hits. Smith struck out six and walked one in 5.2 innings.
Reliever Thomas McIlraith retired the first two batters of the seventh but then walked Alejandro Kirk. Demi Orimoloye followed with a single. Clemens then delivered the go-ahead double.
Murray set a career high with 12 strikeouts over six innings. He did not walk a batter and threw just 82 pitches. At one point he struck out six Mets in row and retired 13 in a row.
Jackson Rees was perfect in the seventh and eighth. Brad Wilson closed out a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventh save.
Dunedin's Norberto Obeso went 4 for 4. Orimoloye had three hits.
The Mets (7-2, 39-36) and Blue Jays (5-3, 46-27) conclude their three-game series at First Data Field on Thursday with the rubber game. It's Dollar Night with $1 beer (8 oz. cans of Bud and Bud Light), $1 hot dogs, $1 soda and $1 popcorn. The game starts at 6:30 p.m.
