Blue Crabs Sweep, Thompson Throws Near Perfect Game

Waldorf, MD - The All-Star break was just what the doctor ordered for the Blue Crabs. Southern Maryland came off the four day break to sweep a double header over their Freedom Division rivals, the Lancaster Barnstormers. The Blue Crabs tied a season best today, extending their winning streak to four. Southern Maryland also got off to a good start in the second half, as the second game of the doubleheader marked the beginning of the second half of the season. Furthermore, within these victories, Daryl Thompson was two outs away from the first perfect game in Atlantic League history, while Stan Cliburn picked up with 1,700th career managerial win.

Game one featured the right hander, Kyle Simon, (W, 2-4) on the mound. Simon attacked the Barnstormers' bats early and often, and allowed his offense to give him a cushion.

Garrett Granitz (L, 0-1) struggled to keep the Southern Maryland's bats quiet in game one. It was Dean Green who ignited the offense for the Blue Crabs with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. Green has only been on the roster for seven games, but has recorded a hit in each contest and holds a batting average of .435.

Southern Maryland and Lancaster each scored a run in the third inning, giving the Blue Crabs a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. After Cory Vaughn led off the inning with a fly out, Silva reached base on a throwing error. The next batter, Tony Thomas, ripped a double down the third base line, scoring Silva and giving the Blue Crabs a 3-1 edge. Two batters later, Mike Falsetti lined a single into right field scoring another run and putting Southern Maryland up 4-1. Following Falsetti's single, four consecutive Blue Crabs reached on a walk, scoring three more runs, and putting Southern Maryland up 7-1. They tacked on another run in the inning on a sac fly.

Simon did the rest from there. Throughout the contest, he did not walk a batter while allowing only five hits and two earned runs. While Simon's performance was impressive, Daryl Thompson's was one of the greatest in Blue Crabs' history.

In game two, Daryl Thompson (W, 7-6) was only two outs away from throwing the first perfect game in Atlantic League history. Daryl Thompson attacked hitters early in counts and pitched to contact. This led to a lot of Lancaster hitters popping the ball up in the infield.

The Blue Crabs started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and a runner on first base, Rubi Silva launched a two-run homer over the "Mini Monster" in left field to put Southern Maryland up 2-0. The next three batters reached base for the Blue Crabs setting up the bases loaded with two outs. On the third pitch of the at-bat, Edwin Garcia slapped a single into right field, plating two runners and giving Southern Maryland a four-run lead.

The Blue Crabs added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Blackstone led off the inning with a double that deflected off of the first baseman, K.C. Hobson. Garcia scored Blackstone on an RBI single and they added another run to go up 6-0.

Meanwhile, Daryl Thompson still had not allowed a baserunner going into the seventh inning. With one out, the Barnstormers' Michael Martinez hit a ground ball that deflected off of Thompson's leg for a base hit, and would be the only imperfection in Thompson's near historic outing. The right hander settled down from there, retiring the final two batters of the game in an incredible start for Thompson.

The Blue Crabs took two from the "Stormers, with the latter being the first game of the second half. The Blue Crabs improved to 1-0 in the second half, and will look to continue tomorrow.

The Blue Crabs will return home tomorrow, July 13th, for a game two of a three-game set with the Lancaster Barnstormers, and a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
