Blue Crabs Set Franchise Wins Record In Series Finale

September 15, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

The 2010 Blue Crabs became the winningest club in franchise history with a 7-2 victory over the Bridgeport Bluefish Wednesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. At 80-55, Southern Maryland surpassed its 2009 record of 79-61 and is now six wins better than in 2008. The Blue Crabs went 74-66 in their inaugural season two years ago.

Once again Bridgeport scored first, but in the series finale the Crabs came from behind and posted five runs in the eighth to earn the win. Third baseman Victor Mercedes and catcher Tom Pennino each hit solo home runs to put the Bluefish ahead 2-0 going into the bottom of the third. Mercedes crushed his fourth homer of the season into left-centerfield in the second, and Pennino followed an inning later with his sixth round-tripper of the year.

The Blue Crabs sliced Bridgeport's lead in half on third baseman Patrick Osborn's solo homer into left. It was his eighth of the season, and second this month. Another home run in the fifth, this time by second baseman Casey Benjamin, his 19th this season, tied the game at 2-2.

Bluefish RHP Kevin Mannix threw a scoreless sixth, but subsequently left the game in favor of lefty Paul Oseguera. Mannix struck out seven Blue Crabs, but settled for a no decision. Oseguera could not keep the game tied though, as rightfielder Shaun Cumberland scored on an RBI single by designated hitter Matt Craig in the seventh. Cumberland led the inning off with an infield single.

Oseguera suffered the loss, dropping to 4-5.

With the Crabs ahead 3-2, LHP Brandon Mann (1-2) recorded an out in the eighth before righty Chris Hayes came in to finish the game. Mann earned his first win as a Blue Crab, allowing just two earned runs in 7.1 innings pitched. After Bridgeport dominated the late innings in games one and two, the Blue Crabs scored four runs in the eighth. Osborn drove in two runs, and catcher Travis Howell hit an RBI double. Hayes threw a perfect ninth for his first save of the year.

The Blue Crabs return to action Thursday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium for the first of a four-game series against the York Revolution, to end the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
