WINNIPEG, MB - The Blue Bombers have traded import defensive lineman Kai Ellis to Edmonton for import linebacker Siddeeq Shabazz today.

Shabazz (6-0, 205, New Mexico State '03, DOB: February 5, 1981 in Frankfurt, Germany) comes to Winnipeg after spending his first two years in the CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos.

"Siddeeq brings us a lot of versatility. He can play weak-side linebacker, free safety, or sam linebacker. He runs extremely well. We think he's very bright and help teach the type of defence we're trying to play," said head coach Mike Kelly

Last season, Shabazz played in all 18 regular season games and was second on his team with 63 defensive tackles. He also notched six special teams tackles, four tackles for loss, three sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Shabazz is reunited with former Eskimos defensive coordinator Rick Campbell, now the Blue Bombers' special teams coach.

"Siddeeq's relationship with Rick Campbell is going to be a big help and I certainly appreciated how he handled himself when I was with him in Edmonton last year," Kelly said.

The 28-year-old out of New Mexico State was drafted in the seventh round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. He also spent time with the New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins before coming north to play in the CFL.
