WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Football Club would like to send their deepest sympathy to the family of former Blue Bomber legend, Herb Gray, who passed away at the age of 76 in Goosecreek, Texas.
Gray played for the Bombers from 1956-1965 and was the first defensive player to win the CFL's Most Outstanding Lineman award which he took home in 1960. Gray was a seven-time divisional All-Star and a CFL All-Star in 1962 along with being a team captain for nine of his ten seasons. He played in six Grey Cup's, winning four of them and was named Winnipeg's top defensive player of the half century in 1980. He was inducted into the CFL Hall of Fame in 1983.
"Herb will be missed by everyone who has ever called themselves, not only a Bomber fan, but a football fan," said Blue Bomber President, Jim Bell. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this difficult time."
After retiring from football, Gray moved back to Texas and worked for the Alamo Cement Company for 28 years, before enjoying full retirement in 1999.
