Ricky Ray Extends with the Eskimos

(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos have signed quarterback Ricky Ray to a contract extension that will see him in Green and Gold until the end of the 2013 season, the club announced today.

In signing the two time Grey Cup winnng quarterback and career passing leader in club history, Eskimo General Manager Eric Tillman said, "We're very pleased to have reached this agreement with Ricky. We strongly believe he's a championship caliber player and person. As we go forward with this new deal it's our responsibility to surround him with a nucleus that will allow us to play at the highest level. Ricky has consistently talked about one objective - winning. Throughout the organization we share that collective desire to win and to restore the proud Eskimo tradition."

In 17 games (16 starts) in the 2010 season, the California native completed 288 of448 passes (64.3%) for 3565 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also ran for 302 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries. Week #15 at BC, Ray established a career-high rushing record carrying the ball 12 times for 135 yards, including a career best 45 yard run and one touchdown.

Ray says, "I'm thrilled to continue my career with the Eskimos and will do whatever I can to help bring more Grey Cup championships to Edmonton. We showed improvement down the stretch in 2010 and with the off-season changes, I think the club is poised to win consistently again."

Originally signing with the Eskimos in 2002, the Sacramento State product led the team to an appearance in the 2002 Grey Cup and to their 12th championship in 2003. Ray spent the 2004 season with the New York Jets. He returned to Edmonton in 2005 and again led the Eskimos to a grey Cup victory. He was named the 2005 Grey Cup MVP that year. In his eight years with the Green and Gold, Ray has climbed to the top of almost all passing records in team history including most career completions (2882), most career yards (35,935) and most career touchdowns (186).
