LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. - Tate Gillespie (Navarro) came for for Will Smith (Presbyterian) in the ninth garnering a tenuous bases loaded 1 out situation in a tied ballgame. The first pitch from Gillespie sailed away from the catcher Brandon Johnson (Richmond) and the Wilson Tobs held on to knock off the blowfish from Lexington County Baseball stadium.
The Blowfish started the scoring in the first when Brett Auckland walked in via a wild pitch from Wilson starter Travis Holden (Appalachian State) but Wilson retied the game when Tucker Burgess (North Greenville) balked in a run with bases loaded and two outs in the second.
The game remained scoreless until the seventh when Wilson took advantage of a costly throwing error by Derek Olenchuk (Newberry) that moved two Tobs in scoring position with 1 out.
One would come in on the Logan Baldwin (Georgia Southern) sac fly and the other would score via the Bryson Bowman (Western Carolina) RBI single.
The Blowfish stormed back in the eighth when they loaded the bases with two out for the catcher Johnson who smoked a two run single into right field tying the ballgame at 3.
In the ninth though Smith struggled loading the bases with one out in the top half of the inning and Tate Gillespie allowed the first pitch he threw to Bowman to fly past the glove of Johnson to the backstop allowing Tyler Howsley (UC San Diego) to score.
The Blowfish went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth and dropped their first matchup to Wilson 4-3.
Lexington County looks to stay perfect tomorrow night against the Florence RedWolves as they host the matchup from Lexington County Baseball Stadium. Coverage on z93.1 FM The Lake begins at 6:50 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
