Steamers Drop Another Close One

EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers fell to the Asheboro Copperheads by a score of 9-8 on Monday night. Edenton (7-11) lost its sixth straight, while Asheboro (11-5) hung up a season-high 14 hits and nine runs.

Eric Scheuermann shouldered the loss for the Clams. Scheuermann (1-1) surrendered two runs on two hits in the ninth inning.

Devin Sweet grabbed the win for the Copperheads. Sweet (3-0) held the Steamers scoreless on one hit through one inning. Bryan Blanton held Edenton hitless with one strikeout in the ninth to collect his seventh save of the summer.

After taking a 1-0 in the first, the Steamers broke things open with a three-run second. Jimbo Pernetti led off with a single, and Brandon Gragilla drew a walk to put men on first and second. Tyler Ammerman cracked a three-run dinger to put the Clams up 4-0.

Asheboro cut the deficit in half in the top of the third. Deivy Palmeiro knocked a on-out homer to put the Copperheads on the board. Derek Perry followed with a walk, moving to third when a pickoff attempt got by Gragilla at first, and he came in to score on a balk by Andrew Hinckley.

The Snakes surrendered a run in the bottom of the inning, but they took their first lead with four runs in the fifth. Back-to-back homeruns from Palmeiro and Perry cut the lead to 5-4, and five consecutive plated two more to give Asheboro a 6-5 advantage. Another homerun off the bat of Jordan Winawer in the sixth gave the Copperheads a 7-5 lead.

Edenton regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh, starting with a leadoff homerun for Tony Rosselli. After Bobby Schuman singled, Pernetti gave the Steamers the lead with a two-run shot to center.

Asheboro took back the lead in the final inning. T.J. Nichting led off with a single, coming home on the fifth Copperhead homerun, off the bat of Kyle Smith.
