Green Bay Blizzard News Release
On Saturday night in front of a crowd of more than 4,000 fans, the Green Bay Blizzard defeated the Macon Knights 28-18 in the lowest total scoring game in Blizzard franchise history. The win improved the Blizzard to 2-1, while dropping the Knights to 2-2.
The Blizzard faithful didn't mind that the game was a defensive struggle from the very beginning, because the Blizzard gritted it out until the very end. Both teams put up a good fight, though, as they combined for 9 tackles for loss and 6 sacks. Green Bay's defensive backs shined, intercepting Knights QB Lionel Hayes 4 times, including 2 by WR/DB DaQuan Davis. The Knights defense also proved difficult for the Blizzard to solve, but Macon failed to make the most of the opportunities that arose, dropping a number of key interception possibilities.
Overall, the Green Bay defense was nearly flawless. In addition to holding Macon to only 18 points, the Blizzard defense completely froze out the Knights in the first half, going into the break with a 12-0 lead. By holding Macon to only 18 points total, the Blizzard set a new franchise mark for fewest points allowed, breaking the old mark of 29 which was previously set in a 57-29 victory over the Peoria Pirates in 2004. The combined score of 46 points was also a new record, besting the previous lowest scoring output of 60, recorded in a 31-29 loss to the San Diego Riptide in 2003.
Defensive standouts included Davis, whose stellar night consisted of 5 tackles, 2 passes defensed and 2 interceptions; DS Ryan Bowers, who notched 8 tackles and an Int; and OL/DL Chris Eggleston, who did it all with 2.5 tackles, 1 blocked pass and 1 sack. Eggleston and his linemates made their home in the Knights backfield, as they stormed to 4 sacks and numerous tackles for loss.
On offense, QB Johnny Turman had a solid night. He completed 21 of his 34 pass attempts and threw for 4 TDs, but his most impressive stat of the night was 0 - as in no interceptions. Turman's TDs were shared by OS Troy Mason, who caught 7 passes for 95 yards and 2 TDs, and WR/LB Gerald Harris, who pulled in 6 receptions for 79 yards and 2 TDs.
Game awards were swept by the Blizzard: Mason was named the Offensive Player of the Game; Eggleston, who led the way for the men in the trenches, earned U.S. Army Ironman of the Game; and in a rare presentation of the award, the entire Blizzard defense was honored as the ADT Defensive Player of the Game.
The Blizzard looks to continue their winning ways as they hit the road for a 2-week swing that will take them to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to meet the Pioneers on April 30th, and then to Arkansas for a May 7th tilt against the Twisters. The team then returns home to the Resch Center for a 2-game home stand, facing off against the Louisville Fire on May 14th (Oneida Casino "Old School Football" Night, where the first 1,000 fans age 21 and older receive a free old-time replica leather football helmet), and then another meeting with the rival Quad City Steamwheelers on May 14th (St. Mary's Hospital/A Women's Place Ladies Night, where the first 1,000 ladies receive a free green & silver feather boa).
