Bakersfield Blitz News Release

BAKERSFIELD - Bakersfield Blitz OL/DL Jerry Turner and DS Alex Wallace showed support for the 33rd Annual Rafer Johnson Day at the Rafer Johnson Children's Center Friday morning, April 21.

Rafer Johnson Day is dedicated to local disabled students at the Rafer Johnson Children's Center and local elementary schools; giving them an opportunity to participate in Special Olympic events. The Special Olympic track meet included a short run, ball throw, and jump. Among the local celebrity appearances were Mr. Rafer Johnson, Mayor Harvey Hall, and two of our very own Blitz players, Jerry Turner and Alex Wallace.

Jerry Turner and Alex Wallace lifted spirits as they autographed t-shirts, took pictures, handed out ribbons, and cheered on participants.

Mr. Rafer Johnson received an Olympic silver medal in the decathlon event in the Summer Olympics of 1956. He is also an Olympic Gold Medalist in the Rome Olympics in 1960 for 1500 meters. After his gold medal, Johnson ended his athletic career. Johnson founded the Rafer Johnson Children's center which is dedicated to serve students from birth to kindergarten that have been identified as having disabilities ranging from mild to severe.
