Manchester Wolves News Release
J.J. McKelvey is returning to the Manchester Wolves, sort of. The former Wolves' star wide receiver is making a special trip into Manchester to take part in the opening coin-toss prior to tomorrow night's 7:30 p.m. match up against East Division rival Albany Conquest (2-1) on Brady Sullivan Field at the Verizon Wireless Arena.
McKelvey's Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League will be taking on the Columbus Destroyers Friday night in Philadelphia, but McKelvey will be watching from the sidelines due to an ankle injury he suffered in Week 9 against the Dallas Desperados. The Soul (7-5), co-owned by rock star Jon Bon Jovi, are currently tied for second place in the Eastern Division of the National Conference. Prior to the injury, McKelvey was living up to his billing as "Preseason Rookie of the Year", voted on by the AFL Writers Association, as he was leading the Soul in receiving touchdowns with 11. The South Carolina native currently has 28 catches for 478 yards and is leading the league among players with 25+ catches with 17.1 yards per catch, while totaling 15.0 tackles on defense.
The Clemson University graduate is ecstatic to be returning to the Queen City, the place that he called his "home away from home" during the 2004 and 2005 seasons and where his professional football career flourished.
"I can't wait to comeback to Manchester and see all my old friends, teammates and especially the great fans that have supported me," said McKelvey. "Hopefully my return fires everybody up so that we can pick up a big win against the Conquest!"
In 2005 under Wolves' Head Coach Ben Bennett, McKelvey shattered nine franchise records on his way to earning First Team honors on the American Conference All-af2 team. He also led the league in receptions with 138 (1,454 receiving yards) and ranked second in the league in scoring with 298 points (44 receiving TDs, three rushing TDs, one INT TD, five 2-pt conversions). Defensively, he collected 21.5 total tackles, one sack, one INT, and two pass breakups. McKelvey also earned four Offensive Player of the Game awards, five Ironman of the Game awards, and one af2 Ironman of the Week honor during his impressive 2005 campaign. His efforts were instrumental in helping the Wolves claim their first East Division crown and earn a trip to the second round of the af2 playoffs.
Also, fans that check out the Wolves' brand new merchandise line behind Section 120-121 during the first quarter will receive a J.J. McKelvey autograph!!!
