Louisville Fire News Release

Louisville, KY - The Louisville Fire (0-2) hosted the Birmingham Steeldogs (1-1) as they looked to avenge their home opener loss during the prior week in Freedom Hall. The Fire started the contest with a pretty consistent defense overall but got burned on big plays by the Steeldogs.

After this initial score by the Steeldogs the Fire answered right back with a 36 yard pass from Fire QB Brett Dietz to OS Rob Mager. After a Birmingham touchdown with a missed conversion, QB Ryan Hawk to OS Kerry Wright, the Steeldogs miffed a kickoff hitting the scoreboard halo giving the Fire great field position leading to a late first quarter touchdown with only 2:19 left on the clock. QB Dietz sprinted to the end zone on a 2-yard sprint allowing the Fire to lead the Steeldogs 14-13.

With only 4:35 left in the 2nd quarter, the Steeldogs were penalized for a roughing the quarterback personal foul penalty resulting in the Fire to move half the distance to the goal line once again putting them in a great position to score. After a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Fire FB Scott Power, the Fire continued to administer the pressure resulting in another opportunity to increase their score. With only 22 seconds left in the first half the Fire took advantage of their opportunity as QB Dietz connected with WR Dennis Fryzel on a 30-yard pass bringing the score to 28 - 13.

Even though the first half ended with the Fire in the lead they proved in the third quarter that they were just getting started. To start off the third quarter, QB Dietz fired a 43-yard touchdown to WR Mager to not only build momentum but a healthy lead. The Steeldogs shortly followed up with a score of their own with a 42-yard touchdown pass from QB Hawk to WR Lawrence Story. Less than five minutes later the Fire answered with a 7-yard pass once again from QB Dietz to WR Mager. To close out the third quarter Steeldogs QB Hawk found his earlier target in WR Wright for six points and failed to convert for the extra point once again.

In the fourth quarter the Fire refused to let up and pushed the score up once again with a short 9-yardpass from QB Dietz to WR Dennis Fryzel for the second time in the game. The Steeldogs bounced back with two consecutive scoring drives including a 45-yard pass from QB Hawk to WR Lawrence Story. The Fire quickly tamed the ‘dogs with two consecutive passing scores the first coming from red hot QB Dietz to WR Fryzel and the second from QB Joel Steele to OS Mager.

This contest was a big boost for the Fire as three franchise records were broken two of which are attributed to the outstanding performance of QB Dietz. QB Dietz broke the highest percentage of completed passes with 85.2 percent. Dietz also broke the record for the highest pass efficiency rating with a 158.3 performance. These broken records are not to leave out OS Mager who broke the record for the most receiving yards with 208 yards.
