Blazers' Zary Named WHL McSweeney's Player of the Month
October 31, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Kamloops Blazers forward Connor Zary has been named the WHL McSweeney's Player of the Month for September and October 2019.
A 'B'-rated prospect by NHL Central Scouting for the 2020 NHL Draft, Zary led the league in scoring over the first two calendar months of the 2019-20 WHL Regular Season with 21 points (5G-16A), including a pair of power-play goals in 14 games. His 16 assists also led the WHL.
In regular-season play during the months of September and October, Zary recorded a point in all but one game, posting a league-best 13-game point streak to begin the season. Of his performances throughout the month, Zary had six multi-point games, including a pair of three-point contests and four two-point efforts.
The 6-foot-0, 180-pound forward from Saskatoon, Sask. helped guide the Blazers to a 9-5-0-0 record, placing them first in the B.C. Division. The 18-year-old is in his third season with the Blazers, having recorded 119 points (41G-78A) in 146 WHL regular season games. Those totals include 13 power-play goals, three short-handed goals, and eight game-winning goals.
He also has four points (3G-1A) in four WHL playoff games. Zary was chosen by the Blazers in the second round, 37th overall, of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. Internationally, Zary has represented Canada at the 2019 IIHF Under-18 World Championship, posting seven points (4G-3A) in seven games.
Earlier this month, Zary was named to Team WHL's roster for the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series. This year, the series will return to Zary's home province of Saskatchewan, with games in his hometown of Saskatoon and nearby Prince Albert.
Up next for Zary and the Blazers is a trip south of the 49th parallel, beginning with a game against the Everett Silvertips on Saturday, November 2 (7:05 p.m. PT).
