Blazers rally for overtime Halloween win
October 31, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- The Oklahoma City Blazers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Memphis RiverKings 3-2 in overtime Tuesday night at the DeSoto Civic Center. The win kept the Blazers without a regulation loss at 4-0-1. The RiverKings saw their record move to 2-1-2. The two teams meet again this Friday night at 7:35 at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City.
The RiverKings scored twice in the first period to build that 2-0 advantage. Rookie Tyler McGregor scored his first professional goal at 6:08 of the first period with Bobby Gates and Jason Sessa assisting. Ryan Campbell would then tip in a Steve Mackway shot from the point 6:07 later. That power-play goal was Campbell's team co-leading third of the season as the RiverKings took the 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Blazers' first goal occurred on a wrap-around attempt by Graham Dearle that ended up on the stick of Marty Standish in front of the net and from there behind RiverKings goalie Larry Sterling at 1:36 of the first period. Through the first two periods the RiverKings held a 22-14 shots on goal advantage. The third period would be a different story, though, as Oklahoma City out-shot Memphis 21-6.
The scoreboard stayed 2-1 Memphis until Jared Dumba snuck past the RiverKings defense to score the power play equalizer at 9:55 of the third. Oklahoma City kept the pressure on the rest of the period, with Sterling making several big saves to preserve the tie and force overtime.
The overtime game winner, in a flashback to the failed wrap-around that resulted in a goal earlier in the game, was a successful wrap-around attempt. This time it was Michel Beausoleil who looped around the back of the net from right to left post and just beat Sterling's right skate to the pipe 1:37 into the extra session.
With the point earned for the overtime loss, the RiverKings up their point total to six and are two points back of first place Youngstown in the Northeast Division.
The RiverKings are now 3-1-1 all-time in games played on Halloween.
Following Friday's game at Oklahoma City, the RiverKings play at Tulsa Saturday before returning for a 5:05 game Sunday versus the Rocky Mountain Rage at the DCC.
