Bucks Fall 5-3 To Rayz

LAREDO, Texas - The defending CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks fell 5-3 to the Corpus Christi Rayz in front of 4,965 fans on Halloween night at the LEC. The Bucks got a pair of goals from forward Ladislav Kouba, but came up short. The Bucks are now 2-3-0 with four points and tied for second in the Southeast Division. Laredo is on the road Friday night in Austin. The Bucks return home on Saturday night against the Odessa Jackalopes. The Rayz took advantage of a full two-minute two-man advantage in the first period to take the lead. Defenseman Geno Parrish fired a slap shot from the point that was stopped, but forward Matt Turek hopped on the rebound to make it 1-0 at 12:04. Late in the period the Bucks capitalized on a power play chance of their own. Forward Ladislav Kouba went top shelf with a wrist shot from the bottom of the left circle for his first of the season at 16:47 to tie it at a goal apiece.

The Rayz retook the lead in the second period. Forward Derrick McIver ripped a shot from the top of the right circle that was turned aside, but defenseman Jay Hardwick swatted home the rebound at 11:54 to make it 2-1 Corpus Christi. Once again the Bucks came back to tie the game. With a delayed penalty coming up defenseman Adam Rivet took a pass at the top of the crease and spun in a backhander at 13:47 for his first of the season. The Rayz responded once again as forward Ryan Carter blasted home a slap shot from just inside the top of the right circle with just 11 seconds left in the period.

In the third period the Bucks once again tied the game as Kouba recorded his second goal of the game, this one shorthanded at 9:11. Laredo then went on the power play looking for the lead, but instead it was the Rayz surging to the front. This time forward Justin Quenville had a shorthanded breakaway and scored on a wrist shot to make it 4-3 Corpus Christi at 15:28. Late in the game McIver sealed the win with a breakaway goal at 16:41. FINAL SCORE Corpus Christi 5, Laredo 3.

Eric Marvin allowed five goals on 29 shots and took the loss to fall to 1-1-0. Ron Vogel stopped 30 of 33 shots and improved to 2-1-0. The Bucks went 1-6 on the power play while the Rayz were also 1-6. Laredo out shot the Rayz 33-30.
