Derrick McIver had a goal and three assists, and Justin Quenneville scored the second consecutive game winning goal on Tuesday as the Corpus Christi Rayz beat the Laredo Bucks 5-3 to improve to 2-2 on the year. The Bucks dropped to 2-3 with the loss. The Rayz won their second straight, and kicked off a three-game road trip in style with the win. The Rayz will now travel to Amarillo on Friday night, looking for their third win in a row.
The Rayz broke onto the scoreboard first after Laredo took two penalties on the same play to give the Rayz their sixth two-man advantage of the season. Matt Turek slammed home a rebound chance in the crease at 12:04 for his first goal of the season. Geno Parrish and Derrick McIver assisted on the goal. The Bucks then answered on a power play of their own, when Ladislav Kouba beat Ron Vogel on the inside post to tie the game at one. Kouba was signed earlier in the afternoon after becoming eligible for the roster. The Rayz outshot the Bucks 16-7 in the period.
The Rayz recaptured the lead in the second period when Jay Hardwick ripped a rebound shot from the top of the slot at 11:54 and past Eric Marvin. Hardwick's goal was the third of his career and gave the Rayz a 2-1 lead. The lead was short lived after the Bucks answered at 13:47. Adam Rivet scored his first of the season on a delayed penalty against the Rayz coming to tie the game 2-2. However, before the period closed, the Rayz once again jumped in front of the Bucks. Ryan Carter blasted a slapshot from the right circle past Marvin with 11 seconds left giving the Rayz a 3-2 lead. Despite being outshot 18-6 in the period, the Rayz took a one-goal lead into the third.
In the third period, shorthanded play took over. The Bucks tied it at three on Kouba's second of the night on a shorthanded breakaway at 9:11. The Rayz took their fourth lead of the night on a shorthanded goal of their own when McIver broke Quenneville on a breakaway at 15:28. Quenneville snapped a shot upstairs over Marvin to give the Rayz the lead 4-3. McIver then capped off his four-point night with a breakaway of his own 1:13 later.
Vogel got the win, improving to 2-1 on the season. Marvin took the loss, falling to 1-1. The Rayz were outshot for the first time this season 33-29. Both teams were 1-6 on the power play.
The Rayz will continue their three-game road trip Friday night in Amarillo to take on the Gorillas. After a Saturday night trip to Austin, the Rayz will return to the American Bank Center on Sunday afternoon to host the Odessa Jackalopes at 3:05pm on Caller-Times Family Day.
