
Blazers Defeat T-Birds In Overtime

The Kamloops Blazers defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-4 in overtime Friday night at the Interior Savings Centre.
The T-Birds face the Everett Silvertips on Saturday night at ShoWare Center at 7:05 p.m. Then they face the Kelowna Rockets on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at ShoWare Center.
The T-Birds took a 1-0 lead at 2:49 of the first period. Mitch Elliot fought for the puck behind the Blazers goal and was able to gain control of it. Elliot carried the puck out at the left post and made a centering pass. Elliot-s pass deflected off the skate of a Kamloops defender and through the legs of Blazers goalie Kurtis Mucha for his first career WHL goal.
Kamloops (28-29-2-4) tied the game 1-1 at 7:38 of the first on a goal by Jordan DePape. Matej Bene had the only assist on the goal.
Seattle (14-34-7-4) outshot Kamloops 9-6 in the first period.
Colin Smith gave the Blazers a 2-1 lead at 4:48 of the second period with his fourth goal of the year. Brendan Ranford and CJ Stretch had assists on the goal.
Ranford scored at 9:22 of the second to put the Blazers in front 3-1. Chase Schaber and DePape had assists.
Seattle cut the Blazers lead to one goal at 14:10 of the second when Prab Rai scored his 33rd goal of the year. Jeremy Schappert set the puck into the left corner in the Blazers zone. Lindsay Nielsen got a stick on the puck before Rai gained control of it. Rai skated up the boards and curled into the slot. Rai put a quick wrist shot on goal that beat Mucha over the glove.
The Blazers took a 4-2 lead at 19:56 of the second on a goal by Dalibor Bortnak. Schaber and DePape had the assists on the goal.
The Blazers led in shots on goal, 26-19, after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 20-10 in the second period.
Rai cut the Blazers lead to one goal at 1:47 of the third period when he scored a power-play goal. Lindsay Nielsen won a faceoff in the right circle to Brenden Silvester at the right point. Silvester made a quick cross-ice pass to Schappert at the left point. Schappert sent the puck to Rai in the right circle. Rai snapped a shot over Mucha-s glove for his 34th goal of the year.
Seattle tied the game 4-4 at 15:20 of the third on a power-play goal from Colin Jacobs. Brenden Dillon sent the puck up the right side of the ice to Charles Wells. Wells carried the puck down to the goal line and then centered the puck to Jacobs coming off the Seattle bench. Jacobs one-timed Wells- pass and beat Mucha low on the glove side for the tying goal.
Seattle outshot Kamloops 7-6 in the third period.
Stretch scored an unassisted goal at 1:22 of overtime to get the win for the Blazers.
The Blazers outshot the T-Birds 33-27 in the game.
Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard made 28 saves on 33 shots and his record is now 12-28-7-4.
Mucha stopped 23 of 27 shots and his record is now 21-14-0-3.
