Rapid City Rush News Release
(Rapid City, SD) - It was "Pink at the Rink" night as the Rapid City Rush hosted the Oklahoma City Blazers in the second game of their doubleheader. The Rush were hoping to avenge a 4-2 loss handed to them by the Blazers the night before but the Blazers would complete the weekend sweep as they topped the Rush, 3-1.
The first period saw the Rush getting much more physical than the fans at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center had seen the night before, with Rapid City's Jason Goulet and Oklahoma City's, Justin Sawyer dropping the gloves two minutes into the contest. The Rush found the back of the net almost two minutes later when Derek LeBlanc put the first point of the night on the board.
The LeBlanc goal came at 3:52 mark in the period, and was assisted by Jon Pelle. Oklahoma City would counter at 10:56 as Tyler Fleck shot a one-timer past Rush goaltender Miguel Beaudry for the powerplay goal. Fleck was set up by DJ Jelitto. The squads would end the initial frame tied up, 1-1.
The middle frame was an exciting, defensive period for both teams, but only after the Blazers struck again. The Rush dominated the shot column in the second, firing 12 at Doug Groenestege. Oklahoma City fired off seven, but got one past Beaudry at 1:41. Reagan Leslie tallied the goal for the Blazers with an assist from Simon Lambert. This goal put Oklahoma City up, 2-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.
The third period would look like a repeat of the second as the Rush wouldn't be able to find the back of the net. Oklahoma City picked up the final goal of the night at the 15:09 mark of the final frame. Jeff McDermid was the Blazer who got the puck past Beaudry, and he was assisted by Brian Passmore. The final score was 3-1.
One of the bright spots of the night was the fact that the Rapid City Rush raised over $10,000 to be distributed evenly between the Rapid City Regional Hospital and the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The event was organized by Rush forward R.G. Flath who, during the intermissions, made his way through the crowd collecting donations.
Rapid City will host division rival, the Colorado Eagles, on Tuesday, February 17th . The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Ice Arena.
