Bloomington Blaze News Release

FORT WAYNE, Indiana - The Bloomington Blaze, presented by Mid-Illini Credit Union, fell short in yet another hard-fought contest to the Fort Wayne Komets by a 2-1 count on New Year's Eve in front of 10,480 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.

The Komets broke through first with 12:40 left in the opening period when Bobby Chaumont converted a 2-on-1 with a point-blank shot. The Blaze answered just 38 seconds into the second period when Vladimir Nikiforov received a deflection in the slot and buried it stick-side. The Komets eventual game-winner came early in the second period, when they took advantage of a Blaze power play turnover just 4:50 into the middle period on Stephon Thorne's fifth goal of the season to grab a 2-1 lead for Fort Wayne. The Blaze were handed a power play with 1:24 left when the Komets were penalized for too many men, but the man-advantage plus an extra attacker could not put the tying goal on the board.

Brian Mahoney-Smith took the loss in his first appearance with the Blaze in net, stopping 33 shots. Nick Boucher collected his 18th win with 36 saves. The teams will meet again on Tuesday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

The Blaze host the rematch with the Komets on Tuesday night at 7:05. It's Two for Tuesday, with two bowl tickets available for only $14 and $2 Pepsi products, hot dogs and popcorn all night. The Blaze are also home on Friday and Saturday nights against the Evansville IceMen. Friday is another Pepsi Date Night, with a second ticket free with the purchase of a regular ticket when bringing a Pepsi product to the U.S. Celllular Coliseum box office, and a second combo meal is free with the purchase of any combo meal. Saturday features the annual Guns and Hoses game, when the Blaze will wear special jerseys to be auctioned after the game, and the first 1,200 fans to Saturday's contest will also receive a T-shirt compliments of Mid-Illini Credit Union and B-104.
