Baltimore Blast News Release

The Blast lost, 7-2, Friday night to the St. Louis Steamers but bounced back to earn a 10-6 win over the California Cougars Sunday night. Denison Cabral and Joel Bailey scored for the Blast against the Steamers and Cabral went on to add two goals against the Cougars. Adauto Neto and P.J. Wakefield also scored two goals in the win over the Cougars. Back-up goalkeeper Sanaldo made his first start of the season yesterday, earning the 10-6 win and making 22 saves.

Wakefield Named MISL Defensive Player of the Week: Blast defender P.J. Wakefield was named MISL Defensive Player of the Week after his two-goal performance in Baltimore's 10-6 win over the California Cougars Sunday night. Wakefield, who was also named Defender of the Week on December 5th, also recorded one block in the game. He has six points (three goals and three assists) and five blocks in seven games this season. A graduate of UMBC and Calvert Hall, Wakefield was the 2002-03 MISL Rookie of the Year. A long-time offensive player, Wakefield moved into a defensive role last season and has become an integral part of Baltimore's defense.

Tschantret Played in 500th Game: Blast forward Lee Tschantret played in the 500th game of his 15-season professional indoor soccer career when the Blast played the California Cougars on December 18th. Tschantret has 976 points in his career (384 goals, 291 assists) and five points (three goals, two assists) this season. He leads the MISL in all-time penalty minutes with 727 in his fifteen seasons and leads the Blast in PIM with 207 since he joined the team for the 2000-01 season. He ranks 15th in MISL history in points (976) and should be the next player to reach the 1,000 point plateau.

Back in Action: After an injury-plagued 2004-05 season, the Blast is back at full strength this year, with the exception of Machel Millwood who had knee surgery on December 8th. Baltimore's all-time leading scorer Denison Cabral is back to his high-scoring ways and forward Carlos Garcia is also back from last-year' s season-ending knee injury and surgery. Cabral and Garcia retuned to the playing field on November 11th after almost a full year (364 days) of not playing in a game. Both players left last season's November 12th game against the Wave last year with knee injuries and underwent surgery later in the season.

Cabral recorded a hat trick in the 12-5 win over the Steamers (11/19) and is tied to rank fifth in the MISL with 11 points after seven games. Garcia has three goals and one assist (four points) so far this season.
