MISL Names Players of the Week

Published on December 19, 2005 under Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release

GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK Brett Phillips, St. Louis Steamers Brett Phillips' performances in the St. Louis Steamers sweep of the Baltimore Blast on Friday at Savvis Center (7-2) and of host Chicago (7-4) on Sunday earned the 36-year-old goalkeeper, his second MISL Goalkeeper of the Week award of the season (Nov. 28). The Steamers have won four-straight games to move into second place in the MISL standings, trailing only Milwaukee (7-0). In fact, in winning five of six games over the past four weeks, Steamers goalkeepers have earned a total of three MISL Goalkeeper of the Week awards, with Phillips' two and Bayard Elfvin winning the other (Dec. 12). Phillips, a native of Tampa, Fla., who began his professional indoor soccer career with the Harrisburg Heat in the 1992-93 season, had perhaps his most impressive showing of the season on Friday. The Blast, the MISL's scoring leader at 7.0 g.p.g. entering Friday's game, was held in check by Phillips, who stopped 11 of 13 of the opposition's shots and yielded a single goal in each half. The 36-year-old veteran also played all 60 minutes in a rare road victory over Chicago on Sunday. Phillips stopped six of 10 shots in that game. For the season, Phillips is 4-2 with 4.96 goals against average and a 62.8 save percentage.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK P.J. Wakefield, Baltimore Blast P. J. Wakefield is also a second-time MISL Player of the Week award winner this season. For this 25-year-old defender, it's also his second such honor of the month (Dec. 5). The defender scored two goals and matched that productivity from a defensive perspective in a 10-6 win over California on Sunday. That MISL game, which was the first-ever played at the brand new Stockton Arena, located on the California city's waterfront, was a see-saw affair with shots galore. Wakefield, the 2002-03 MISL Rookie of the Year, was one of seven Baltimore players to score goals and the only defender to do so, scoring both in a fast-paced second half. In addition, Wakefield was part of a defense that teamed with goalkeeper Sanaldo, who was making his first start in a Baltimore uniform, to shut down an aggressive Cougars team. The Blast (4-3) are in third-place in the MISL standings, trailing Milwaukee (7-0) and St. Louis (5-2). Wakefield is a Baltimore native and ranks fifth on the team in points with six (three goals, three assists), and has five blocks this season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Joe Reiniger, St. Louis Steamers Joe Reiniger scored four goals and added an assist as the Steamers pushed their current win streak to four games. Now 5-2, St. Louis is now sole possession of second-place in the MISL standings, and Reiniger is the points leader for a team whose offense offers opponents many threats. Reiniger had one goal, to push the Steamers' lead to 2-0 in Friday's win at Savvis Center over Baltimore. Against Chicago on Sunday evening he put on a show at the UIC Pavilion, scoring three goals and adding one assist. For the season, the Collinsville, Ill., native, leads the Steamers in points this season with 10, and is tied with Shaun David and Sandre Naumoski for the team lead in goals (six). Now 35 years old, Reiniger is an eight time All-League selection and a six-time All-Star. Last season (2004-05), he appeared in 33 games while leading the Steamers in goals (24) and power play goals (10). He was second on the team in assists (19) and second in total points (43).
