Baltimore, MD - After splitting the opening two games of the season against Utica City FC, the Blast dropped game three on Saturday night at SECU Arena losing to 7-6.
The game got off to a fast start with both teams recording three goals in the opening quarter. Vini Dantas got the scoring started for the Blast with his ninth goal of the season one minute into the match. Ricardo De Queiroz Diegues recorded back-to-back goals to give Utica their first lead of the game. The Blast would answer with back-to-back goals of their own from Jamie Thomas and Jonatas Melo. Before the end of the quarter, Ricardo of Utica would find the back of the net again for the first quarter hat trick. At the end of the first, the game was tied 3-3.
The Blast defense controlled the second quarter holding Utica scoreless. Blast goalkeeper, William Vanzela, recorded 11 saves in the first half. Offensively, Tony Donatelli recorded a goal at the 7:07 mark off an assist from Jamie Thomas and before the end of the half; Juan Galvis found the back of the net on a head ball. At the half, the Blast led 5-3.
Both teams settled in defensively after their halftime adjustments and no goals were recorded in the third quarter.
In a physical fourth quarter, both teams showed why they are two of the league's best. Utica found its offense with three straight goals to begin the quarter. Cristhian Segura, Nate Bourdeau, and Ricardo (fourth of the game) all recorded goals consecutively to give Utica a 6-5 lead. The Blast were able to strike late when Vini Dantas set up Jonathan Melo for the game-tying goal at the 10:29 mark. At the end of regulation, the game was tied 6-6.
At the 5:48 mark in overtime, Utica's Ben Ramin was able to find the back of the net for the game winning goal. At the final buzzer, the Blast were defeated 7-6.
Jonatas Melo led the Blast offense with two goals. Four other players recorded two points on the night. Jereme Raley, Adriano Dos Santos, and the Blast defense recorded 12 blocks and played at a high level all evening.
The Blast hit the road next weekend for back-to-back games in Florida. Saturday December 21st the Blast visit the Florida Tropics at 5:05p.m. EST and Sunday, December 22nd the Blast will face off against the Orlando Seawolves at 3:05p.m. EST.
