Blades Claim #1 Spot in the WHL
March 11, 2011 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
With teams still fighting for playoff spots, your Saskatoon Blades have tallied enough points to clinch the title of regular season WHL Champions with a record of 52-13-0-2 and 106 points after Wednesday night's win against Brandon. Blades will receive the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy on March 19, the final regular season game versus Regina Pats.
Blades play in Brandon tonight and return home tomorrow to battle the Oil Kings (30-30-2-5), the next team in line to receive a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Blades next win will be another milestone for them as it will top the franchise record for most wins in a single season.
There are four regular season games in the Oil Kings vs. Blades series, the Blades have a perfect record against Edmonton with only tomorrow night's game remaining. Last Wednesday these two met at Rexall Place where the Blades reached a 100-point milestone after an 8-5 win. What was a 5-5 tied game with 2:21 remaining in the third period turned into a triumphant night after Stefan Elliott scored on the power play to snap the tie and the team took off with two more goals in the final moments. These two also met on Dec. 18 (4-2) and Jan. 26 (4-3) for two more Blades victories.
Directwest is our game day sponsor, their street team will be handing out prizes throughout the game!
We will be raffling off Marek Viedensky's game-worn jersey and he will also be signing autographs following the game!
