Lancaster Stormers News Release
Ian Bladergroen became the first player ever to hit three homers either for or against the Barnstormers while James Shanks also drove in six runs as the York Revolution hammered Lancaster, 18-9, Sunday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Lancaster's lead over both York and Somerset has been cut back to just one game in the Freedom Division.
Shanks and Bladergroen both launched two-run homers to right field in the second inning to boost York to a 4-0 lead against Jose Sanchez (4-10). York put another four on the board in the third. After Aaron Herr robbed Vic Rodriguez of a hit down the third base line, Jose Herrera picked up a walk. Shanks followed with a single to left, and Erold Andrus doubled into the right field corner to score the fifth run. Bladergroen chased Sanchez with a line drive homer off the picnic tents for an 8-0 cushion.
The Barnstormers battled back with four runs in the bottom of the inning off Matt DeSalvo (1-0). Josh Johnson walked and scored on a double to left by Lloyd Turner. One out later, Bryant Nelson doubled over the head of Scott Grimes in center to cut the lead to 8-2. Herr slammed a homer to right center, his 15th of the year, bringing Lancaster halfway back.
Pat Overholt and Sean Thompson, the first two Lancaster relievers, ran into control issues over the next two innings, walking six and hitting one as the Revolution scored six more times, three on a double by Shanks to left center in the fifth.
Again the Barnstormers fought back, picking up two runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Nelson and Ryan Mulhern. Mulhern belted a three-run homer in the seventh to slice the lead back to 14-9.
However, Bladergroen was due up to lead off the eighth. He connected for a monstrous homer to right that disappeared into the night, taking any further comeback hopes along with it.
Lancaster is off on Monday and will open a three-game series at Newark on Tuesday morning at 11:05. Jason Simontacchi (4-6) will make that start for the Barnstormers against Mike Loree (4-9).
NOTES: The Barnstormers have dropped seven of their last nine decisions...Turner is batting .360 with nine doubles since July 24...Herr tied Jason Perry for the team lead in RBI with 72...Mulhern's homer was his first since coming off the DL...Bladergroen and Shanks were the first pair of opposing players to drive in five or more runs in a game against the Barnstormers...Lancaster pitchers walked a season-high 11...The batters tied a season high with 14 strikeouts...At 3:34, it was the longest nine-inning game played by the Barnstormers in 2010.
