August 14, 2009 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release
FORT WORTH, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts beat the Fort Worth Cats 4-2 at LaGrave Field on Friday night.
Derek Blacksher became the American Association's first 10-game winner of the season, tossing seven strong innings in the victory. Blacksher allowed one run on just five hits while walking two and striking out two. Blacksher has won five straight decisions and eight of his last nine. The righty increased his streak to 107.1 innings this season without allowing a home run, the longest in the league.
Wichita took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth. Brenan Herrera drew a lead off walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Kelley Gulledge. Josh Horn singled Herrera home from third for the game's first run.
After the Cats tied it on a Brian Fryer RBI single in the bottom of the inning, Steve Pearson and Josh Horn connected on a relay throw to home on Patrick O'Sullivan's double to right that cut down Fryer as the potential lead run.
The Wingnuts rode the defensive momentum into the seventh when Michael Thompson ripped a double down the left field line to score two runs and give the Wingnuts a 3-1 lead. Brenan Herrera eventually plated Thompson on a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 4-1.
Nat Harris took a no-decision for the Cats, allowing one run on two hits in six innings. The Wingnuts scored six times off of righty Dan Grybash.
Justin Young worked the eighth inning in relief of Blacksher while Doug Hurn pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his third save of the season. Thompson has hit safely in eight games in a row.
