Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - Trying to fight a couple of teams for the second playoff spot in the South Division in the American Association, the Shreveport-Bossier Captains made a trade and signed a veteran on Friday, as they signed veteran infielder Luis Guance off waivers from the Pensacola Pelicans and traded two other veterans, infielder Richard Paz and outfielder Selwyn Langaigne, to San Angelo (Texas) of the United League for left-handed pitcher Drew Coffey.
Guance, who turns 29 in two weeks, reunites with Captains manager Ricky VanAsselberg, who managed him with Alexandria the last three seasons. Guance hit no worse then .293 in his three years with VanAsselberg, including a career best .328 in 2008. Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Guance began his professional career in 2000 with the Colorado Rockies organization. He advanced as high as double-A Tulsa in 2005.
This season, Guance was hitting .266 with Pensacola, along with one home run and 34 RBIs, playing in 69 games. He also brings speed to the Captains lineup, stealing 22 bases in 28 attempts this season.
The left-handed Coffey was 2-3 with a 3.82 ERA in 13 starts with San Angelo this season. The Phoenix native has struck out 46 batters this season against walks, and has held opponents to a .254 batting average. Playing in a hitter-friendly ballpark, Coffey has also only allowed one longball in 31 1/3 innings at home.
Originally drafted in the 18th round of the 2004 draft by Kansas City, Coffey spent two years in the Royals organization. He then was in the Frontier League in 2006, with a combined record of 5-6. He was then picked up by the Rockies, and spent two years with the Tri-City Valley Cats (single-A), going 2-5 in 22 games, 10 of which were starts. In his career, Coffey is 8-11 with a 4.21 ERA, allowing a .270 opponent's batting average with 147 strikeouts against 97 walks in 190 2/3 innings.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains take on the Grand Prairie AirHogs in a three-game series starting on Friday, August 14 at 7:05 p.m. The Captains return home on Monday, August 17 for Jose Cuervo Presents Margarita Monday, with half-priced margaritas all night long for the start of a pivotal three-game series against first-place Pensacola.
