Grand Prairie AirHogs News Release

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - The top of the first inning went well for the Shreveport-Bossier Captains Friday night. Bryan Sabatella led off with a single to left-center, and eventually scored on a single by Jose Torres to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. But after that, things got about as bad as they could, and the Grand Prairie AirHogs went on to rout the Captains by a score of 17-4 to take the opener of a three-game series.

Captains starter Luke Massetti (7-3) gave up a bunt single to Aaron Garza to start the bottom of the first, and then walked Daniel Berg. After the righty hit Cesar Nicolas with a pitch, Captains manager Ricky VanAsselberg came out to the mound with trainer Preston Lutes to talk with Massetti. After about a minute of talk, Massetti departed, having re-aggravated a groin injury.

Derrick Miramontes came in and promptly allowed a three-run triple to Mike Conroy to left-center, before Javier Brito brought Conroy in with a grounder to short. In the bottom of the second, JB Tucker doubled to left-center leading off, before Jonathan Dziomba was hit by a pitch. Aaron Garza then sacrificed the runners over, and VanAsselberg went to the bullpen again, summoning Logan Williamson to pitch to Berg with first and third and one out. Williamson got a little chopper in front of the plate, but Berg beat the throw to load the bases.

Williamson buckled down and got Nicolas on strikes, but he then hit Conroy and walked Brito to force in a pair of runs. After Shreveport-Bossier (39-42, 17-16 2nd half) scored twice in the third on RBIs by Torres and Jonathan Reynoso to get to within 6-3, Williamson gave up a run in the bottom half and then he and Robert Romero ran into major trouble in the bottom of the fourth.

The lefty walked Nicolas and Conroy to start the inning, before Brito brought both runners in with a double down the leftfield line. After another walk, to Gabriel, and a flyout, Tucker singled to knock out Williamson. Romero came in and gave up a two-run single to Jonathan Dziomba, before hitting Garza to load the bases. The righty then walked Berg and Nicolas, forcing in two more runs, before an RBI single by Conroy ended the carnage. All told, it was a 12-batter, eight-run inning, on only four AirHogs hits.

Grand Prairie (41-41, 18-16) tacked on a run in the sixth and seventh innings to complete their scoring, leapfrogging Shreveport-Bossier into second place by half a game in the 2nd half standings.

Matt Green (6-5) got the win for the AirHogs, his second start in a row beating the Captains. The righty went seven innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, with two walks and 10 strikeouts. After Reynoso's RBI single in the third, Green faced the minimum, erasing a walk with a strike-him-out, throw-him-out double play, and retiring the final 11 batters he faced, with seven of his strikeouts.

Notes: The first four Captains pitchers combined for seven walks and four hit batters (one each) with one strikeout. The last three, Matt Petty, Jakob Cunningham and Justin Dowdy, had no walks and no hit batters, with five strikeouts...Angelo Fermin hit an inside-the-park home run with two outs in the top of the ninth, his first homer of the year, the first inside-the-parker for the Captains this year, and the first ever in the two seasons of QuikTrip Park...The AirHogs got the leadoff man on base in each of the first six innings, scoring all six times...Conroy and Brito each drove in five runs, and Dziomba knocked in three on his 22nd birthday...Nicolas was the only AirHogs hitter to not get a hit, but his bases-loaded walk was his league-record-setting 92nd RBI of the year...All nine AirHogs did score at least one run.
