Sanford Mainers News Release
The Sanford Mainers visited the New Bedford Bay Sox tonight for the third time in less than two weeks. In this time they ended up in their second three-game losing streak this season.
EJ Ashworth took the hill for the second time this season, both coming against the Bay Sox offense. Even though he didn't record a decision, he helped his team defeat the Bay Sox with a final score of 5-1.
New Bedford scored first in the fourth inning when Ashworth walked a run in after loading the bases. The Bay Sox threatened a couple more times later in the game, but came up short and ended the game with the sole run.
After six scoreless innings from Bay Sox pitching, the Mainers finally found themselves on the board.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Troy Black pulled out of his 1 for 24 slump and smacked a 2-RBI double to right field to put the Mainers ahead 2-1.
They continued their offense in the following inning scoring three more runs. Jose Torralba lead off the inning with a single and later reached second on a failed hit and run ground out by Paul Kronenfeld.
Jordan Betts switched places with Torralba, hitting an RBI double to left field with only one out in the inning. Anthony Hajjar continued his hitting streak immediately after, putting himself on first with an RBI single.
After reaching second base, Hajjar crossed the plate for the team's fifth run on an error by Bay Sox second baseman Evan King allowing Brett Armour to reach base.
John Gorman came out of the bullpen in the ninth inning to finish off the game. After allowing a lead off single, he got Brendan O'Brien to go down swinging, and then forced Eggleston to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
The Mainers picked up their third win of the season and will return home to face the Newport Gulls for the second time this year. Rohn Pierce is set to make his second start.
Game time for tomorrow night's game is slated for 6:30pm. Catch all the action on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
Notes: Anthony Hajjar extended his hitting streak to six games... He has also reached base safely in all nine games the Mainers have played... Brett Armour recorded his first hit...
