Mountaineers Walk-Off in Game One Against North Adams

Montpelier, Vt. - Michael White hit a two out single in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Sean Trent, giving the Vermont Mountaineers (5-4) a 7-6 victory over North Adams (6-4) in game one of a double header at Montpelier Recreation Field on Tuesday night. The win was Vermont's fourth in their last five games and pushed them above .500 for the first time this year.

For the ninth time this season, the Mountaineers scored first, putting three unearned runs up in the bottom of the second innings against SteepleCats starter Christian MacDonald. Brett Johnson (Little Elm, Texas/TCU) reached on an error from third baseman Bryan Soloman before Austin Green (San Diego, Calif./San Diego) reached first on a throwing error by the catcher Brett Clements. Both runners scored when Johnny Mishu laced a two RBI single into centerfield. Mishu (Nashville, Tenn./Princeton) proceeded to steal second and third before scoring on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the third, Vermont went right back at it with AJ Robinson (Peoria, Ariz./San Diego) doubled to start the frame. He would trot home on Rob Kelly's RBI double pushing the advantage to 4-0. After Logan Pierce (Troy, Ala./Troy) was hit by a pitch, Kelly was thrown out at third on a double steal. Johnson drove in Pierce however with a double and scored on Green's RBI single. Green was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double, ending the inning.

Mountaineers starter Casey Delgado (Miami, Fla./Austin Peay) worked through four scoreless innings without much trouble. Then, in the top of the fifth, Johnson committed a throwing error on Jeff Roy's soft ground ball with two outs that would have ended the inning. The error allowed the inning to continue and North Adams responded with four unearned runs to cut the Mountaineer lead down to two.

The shortened contest went into the final frame (the seventh) with Vermont up 6-4 and closer Kyle Grana on the hill. Grana (St. Louis, Mo./Bellarmine) recorded the first two outs of the inning before Sheehan Planas-Artiaga smashed a double to deep centerfield. League RBI leader Charlie Law then followed with a double of his own to bring the SteepleCats within one. Connor Biggio pinch ran for law and came home on a bloop single from Brett Clements tying the game. It was Grana's first blown save in three tries and marked the first time all summer he has given up a hit.

Kellon Urbon (San Diego, Calif./Cornell) replaced Grana and struck out pinch hitter Esteban Tresgallo to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Sean Trent (Maitland, Fla./Florida) was hit by a pitch to lead the inning. After two straight outs, Green worked a walk chasing North Adams reliever Tom Bamman. Southpaw Matt Longfield came on to deal with lefty hitter Michael White (East Orange, N.J./Louisville). White hit a bloop single into shallow right and with Trent racing home from second, the throw from Will Klausing looked to arrive in plenty of time. Trent slid in feet first just ahead of the tag giving Vermont their first walk-off win of the year.

Bamman (1-1) picked up the hard luck loss going two and one-third innings giving up just one run on no hits, but hitting three batters and walking another. Urbon (1-0) got the win striking out the only batter he faced. Game two is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. and will be another seven inning game.
