Blackhawks drop home opener
December 1, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Bellevue Blackhawks News Release
Bellevue, WA. The defending ABA Western Conference Champion Bellevue Blackhawks professional basketball team opened the home 2005-2006 season at its new venue, the Meydenbauer Convention Center in the heart of the city's downtown Central Business District, with a 101-94 loss to the red hot and still unbeaten Tacoma Navigators. Bellevue star shooting guard, Tim Ellis, earned game scoring honors with another trademark all-around performance of 32 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Ellis' backcourt running mate, Jim Rainwater, added 17 points and grabbed seven boards in the losing effort.
Head coach and 2004-2005 ABA Coach of the Year, Rick Turner, has only had his veteran squad together for two weeks so far this season and expects to see marked improvement in the coming weeks. "We're just about where I expected we'd be at this point in the season," Turner said. "Tacoma and Bellingham have been practicing together for more than twice as long as we have, and it shows."
Former NBA and Seattle Sonics guard Vincent Askew kept his perfect head coaching record intact as the Navigators moved to 3-0 on the season. Guard Rashaad Powell continued his early season hot streak by pouring in 23 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Guards Jamal Miller and Kenny Tate added 22 and 19 respectively, and Lamar Moritania chipped in with 12.
Tacoma plays at Bellevue again Thursday night at 7pm at the Convention Center before returning home to host the Fresno Heatwave on Sunday, December 4th at Mt. Tahoma High School, while Bellevue takes on the Bellingham Slam at home on Sunday.
