Blackford, Aviles Take MLB Draft League Homer Lead, Spikes Fall to Keys, 10-7

FREDERICK, Md. - Braedon BlackfordandLuis Avileseach smashed their fifth home run of the Major League Baseball Draft League's second half to go to the top of the loop's homer leaderboard, though the State College Spikes fell to the Frederick Keys in a 10-7 slugfest on Sunday afternoon at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium.

The Spikes (15-16 2ndHalf) trailed 5-0 after two innings but had closed the deficit to 5-3 when Blackford came to the plate in the fourth inning. The Purdue Fort Wayne product sent a 3-2 pitch from Frederick (13-14 2ndHalf) relieverMason Philley404 feet off the pitch timer in center field for a solo shot.

Two innings later, the Spikes led 6-5 before Aviles stepped in and cranked the first pitch he saw fromKyle Greenler(1-2) off the left field videoboard, 40 feet above the ground, for a 432-foot solo shot of his own. In a twist, all five of Aviles's home runs this season have been solo homers.

State College's comeback was also aided by a two-run double in third and an RBI single in the fourth fromZac Vooletich,as well asBrennen Dorighi's run-scoring fielder's choice in the third andCarlos Contreras's RBI groundout in the fourth.

However, Frederick also had some punch asTaylor Smithhit his third home run of the year with a three-run shot in the first, and then added more in the eighth. With the score 7-6 in the Spikes' favor,Logan Thomasonwas hit by a pitch andJohnny Kampessingled up the middle to set the table forCameron Butler, who launched a three-run homer to left field to put the Keys back in front, 9-7.

Smith then contributed an RBI single after a Spikes error to cap the scoring.

Patrick Kudelka(2-3) took the loss after yielding four runs, three of them earned, on four hits and a hit batsman while striking out one batter over one inning.

Greenler picked up the win, allowing two hits, including Aviles's homer, while striking out one over three innings of one-run ball.Kyle Salley(3) allowed a walk and a single but pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

After an off day on Monday, the Spikes will embark on another road series as they visit the Trenton Thunder on Tuesday to start a three-game set consisting of a trio of 7:00 p.m. matchups. Pitching for the series has not yet been determined.

Following the three games at Trenton, the Spikes will come back home on Friday, August 18 to start a weekend series against West Virginia.
