Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (June 14, 2011) -- Dan Black stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning, hitless in his first five at bats all as a left-handed batter.
But with a southpaw on the mound for Delmarva, the switch-hitting Black approached the plate for the first time in the game as a right- handed hitter and blasted a walk-off grand slam, his third straight game with a right-handed homer (11), as the Kannapolis Intimidators defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds, 5-1, in extra innings on Tuesday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
Kyle Eveland led off the bottom of the 12th with a single to right field and advanced to third base on a pair of wild pitches. Walks to John Spatola and Brady Shoemaker loaded the bases with no outs, and two batters later Black came through with his fourth home run in the Intimidators last five games.
Reid Kelly (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless, hitless inning of relief. Jake Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth and 10th innings for the Intimidators, bouncing back to get out of a bases loaded, no out jam in the top of the ninth inning by striking out the next three batters.
Ashur Tolliver (1-1) took the loss for Delmarva. Ryan Palsha and David Walters each pitched two scoreless innings of relief after starter Scott Copeland went six innings.
John Spatola led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run (3), putting the Intimidators on the board first for the third time in three games against the Shorebirds.
Delmarva overcame an early 1-0 lead, tying the game in the seventh on a Mikey Planeta sacrifice fly to cash Brenden Webb, who doubled to lead off the inning.
Intimidators starter Dexter Carter did not factor into the decision despite his first quality start of the season, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing six hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Kannapolis will play for a series sweep of Delmarva on Wednesday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, sending RHP Paul Burnside (6-2, 3.13 ERA) to the mound against LHP Jarret Martin (2-3, 5.65) for the Shorebirds. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
