Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa -As players took the ice all across the nation to celebrate Hockey Weekend Across America, the Dubuque Fighting Saints organization did its part in helping grow the game of hockey in the Tri-State region. Dubuque wore special jerseys as part of a BLACK OUT presented by Truck Country last Friday night versus Green Bay, and after the game, the jerseys were auctioned off to raise money for the Dubuque Youth Hockey Association. In total, over $15,000 was raised to help DYHA to continue to promote and grow hockey in the Dubuque area.
Defensemen Kyle McKenzie's jersey went for a team high $1,800. This is the largest amount raised for a single jersey during any of the Fighting Saints three jersey auctions this season. The post-game jersey auction in total raised $15,050 for DYHA. Forward Seamus Malone's jersey went for $1,000 and captain Shane Sooth's jersey registered an $800 bid.
"This fundraising opportunity was really important to DYHA," said Brian McCoy, DYHA President. "We run on a tight budget. For us to partner up with the Saints and have them help us raise this amount of money makes a big impact. We have taken a fairly aggressive approach this year in purchasing off ice training gear and an additional 60 plus hours of icetime for our players. This money will help cover these additional expenses that we have invested this year. However, our partnership with the Saints is not just about fundraising for us. We are extremely excited and proud to wear the Jr. Saints logo and be partnered with such a great organization."
The Fighting Saints entered a partnership with DYHA this past summer and the organization changed the name of all of its travel teams from the Stars to the Jr. Saints. Over 200 children play for DYHA teams, and the Fighting Saints help the organization by providing jerseys, socks, and warmups for the travel teams. Additionally, Fighting Saints players and coaches are on the ice instructing DYHA players on a weekly basis. In the last year, the Fighting Saints have donated over $30,000 to DYHA.
"Once again, our fans responded to the jerseys and, more importantly, the cause they were supporting," said Dubuque Fighting Saints President Dan Lehv. "Growing the sport of hockey starts on the youth level, and we're fortunate to have partners in DYHA that are working towards the collective goal of increasing the number of kids in our region that are playing this great game."
A limited number of replica BLACK OUT jerseys are available for purchase in select sizes. Fans can call 563.583.6880 to inquire about availability of these limited edition jerseys that cost $95.95 each. The Fighting Saints play on the road this weekend at Waterloo and Cedar Rapids, but return home on Friday, March 1 versus Cedar Rapids at 7:35 p.m. Tickets to that contest, and all nine home games during the month of March, are available online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
