Chicago Steel News Release
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Three third period goals turned a close game into a one-sided affair as the Waterloo Black Hawks (26-20-2-3, 57 points) defeated the Chicago Steel (21-22-4-3, 49 points) Friday at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Zach Yon tallied two goals and added an assist for the Black Hawks, while Jake Jaremko scored the lone goal for Chicago.
Waterloo was able to solve Chicago's top-ranked penalty kill unit on their first power play opportunity of the game. Nick Swaney fed a low-slot pass to Zach Yon, who one-timed a shot past the glove of Steel goaltender Daniel Vladar at 12:51. Later in the period, Waterloo's Shane Bowers would not have the same luck, as Daniel Vladar punched away Bowers' breakaway opportunity with a stellar blocker save. The Black Hawks outshot Chicago 10-4 in the opening period, carrying a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Following a scoreless second period, Waterloo increased their lead to 2-0 early in the third. Ryan Lohin tallied a 4-on-4 goal for the Black Hawks, redirecting a goal line feed from Sam McCormick at the top of the crease at 3:10. Later in the period, Yon drove to the net and buried his own rebound past Vladar at 12:22. Waterloo's Kevin Charyszyn added an empty net goal at 18:14 to increase the lead to 4-0.
Waterloo netminder Cale Morris, who played for the Steel for a year and a half before being traded to the Black Hawks last season, was denied a shutout against his former team with 1:25 remaining. Steel winger Austen Long dished the puck to the low slot for an all-alone Jake Jaremko, who slid a backhander past Morris for his team-leading 17th goal of the season.
The Steel conclude a four-game homestand Saturday as the defending Clark Cup Champion Sioux Falls Stampede come to town for Irish Celebration Night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the Steel Box Office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena, by phone at 855-51-STEEL and online at ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
