Berkshire Black Bears News Release
The Black Bears offense floundered under the pitching of Quebec starter Jeff Harris tonight at Wahconah Park, losing 2-1 against Les Capitales. Berkshire starter Courtney Hall also had a strong showing, as there was nothing but goose eggs after 6 innings.
Quebec broke through a scoreless game when John Ballon smashed a 2-run shot over the center field fence, his second in as many nights, giving Quebec a 2-0 edge in the seventh. This would turn out to be all the scoring Les Capitales needed. Thanks to Harris's 10-strikeout performance, the Black Bears were quiet on the scoreboard, but not with chances, leaving four runners at third base with less than two outs over the course of the game. The Black Bears finally showed some life in the ninth inning; Mark Burnett started things off with an infield hit and Chris Briones reached on an error by second baseman, Osmani Garcia. After both runners advanced on throwing error by closer Brad Foss, Ryan Jones hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Burnett from the third. With pinch runner PJ Johnston representing the tying run, Foss struck out Shane Hopper, the Quebec killer from last night. Foss then pitched himself out of a save by plunking Pete Paciorek on the shoulder, bringing manager Joe Ferguson to the mound. Dan Marchetti came in with two outs, Johnston at third and Paciorek the winning run at first. However, the right-hander got Brady Williams to bounce back to the mound, ending the game.
Hall fell to 2-7 with the loss, allowing just two runs and five hits over 8.0 innings, with six strikeouts. Harris (6-2) picked up the win with ten strikeouts, allowing only three hits and gave up no runs. Marchetti picked up his third save this season.
Game three of the 4-game series is tomorrow night at 7:05pm Tony Harden (6-1) vs Lance Franks (3-1).
