Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The constant rain that has followed the heat wave from the early part of the week made its way to Trenton Thunder Ballpark late on Friday night in the second game of a doubleheader between the Buffalo Bisons and Lehigh Valley IronPigs. After Buffalo stormed back with a 5-2 win for their fifth straight victory in game one, the teams got within one out of an official game before the umpires interceded. With the Bisons leading 4-1 with two outs in the top of the fifth, the seven-inning game was suspended and will be completed on Saturday night starting at 5:30 PM at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. Saturday night's originally schedule game will be shortened to seven innings ahead of Sunday's July 4th fireworks spectacular.
Game One Recap: For the third straight game in the series, the IronPigs scored first against Bisons starter Connor Overton. Over the first three batters of the long night, Charlie Tilson and Matt Vierling both doubled to put Lehigh Valley ahead 1-0. However, Buffalo had the immediate answer in the home half against Mark Appel in his second Triple-A start of the season. The first three batters walked and a double play ball off the bat of Major League rehabber Danny Jansen tied the score at one.
In the second inning, Darick Hall led off with a single for the IronPigs and Jake Elmore was plunked with a fastball. A sacrifice bunt from Logan Moore pushed both runners into scoring position and allowed Dalton Guthrie to drive in a run with a single. But once again the Bisons came right back to tie the score in the bottom of the inning when they reloaded the bases on walks with two outs before a Kevin Smith infield single.
Overton (2-0) worked around leadoff base hits in the fourth and fifth, scattering six hits over five innings in his sixth start of the season. The offense backed him up in the bottom of the fifth against IronPigs long man David Paulino, who had allowed just two singles over his first two-and-a-third innings. Two pitches into his leadoff at-bat, Smith came through again with a triple to right-center field. Rowdy Tellez worked a full count before delivering the tiebreaking single to give the Herd their first lead. Another single from Jansen allowed Tyler White to get under a sacrifice fly for a two-run advantage.
Tellez later went deep to make it a 5-2 ballgame as he hit a sixth inning solo home run off Brady Lail for the second time in the series. In the first appearance on his rehab assignment from Toronto, righthander Rafael Dolis got three quick outs in the sixth despite a leadoff doiuble from Ryan Cordell. And John Axford worked a perfect seventh in his Bisons debut for the save and the team's fifth consecutive win.
The Bisons and IronPigs will pick up their suspended game with two outs in the top of the fifth at 5:30 PM on Saturday night. The Bisons lead 4-1 and the teams will complete the seven innings before another 7-inning game for the second-to-last game of the series.
