Bisons' Starter Allows One Run In Six To Earn Win

INDIANAPOLIS -- Right-handed pitcher Tobi Stoner limited the Indianapolis Indians to one run in six innings and the Buffalo bullpen staved off a late Tribe rally to lead the Bisons to a 4-3 win on Saturday night at Victory Field.

The loss drops the Indians' record to 15-14, while the win improves the Bisons record to 17-12 on the season. Indianapolis holds a 2-1 series advantage against Buffalo with the final game of the four-game set scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon.

Bisons' RHP Stoner (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 SO) allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of impressive work to earn his first win of the year, after he picked up a victory in his last start against the Tribe on July 26, 2009, when he allowed four hits and one run over eight innings. RHP John Lujan (2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) earned his first hold of the season after allowing two runs in two innings of work, while RHP Elmer Dessens (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) earned his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

Buffalo took an early lead with two, two-out runs in the top half of the second inning. 3B Mike Hessman led off the frame with a bloop single and moved to second on a base knock by LF Chris Carter. After a double play erased Carter and advanced Hessman to third, Buffalo plated its first run on a double to left field by C Josh Thole. SS Ruben Tejada then capped the scoring in the inning with a single to left field to plate Thole and give Buffalo the 2-0 advantage.

The Bisons tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to double their lead to 4-0. Back-to-back doubles by 1B Mike Jacobs and Hessman accounted for the first Buffalo run before 2B Russ Adams drove in the Bisons' fourth tally with a single to right.

The Indians attempted a late rally with a single run in sixth and two more in the seventh, but the Bisons' bullpen shut the door to preserve the 4-3 win. LF Brandon Moss doubled with one out in the home half of the sixth and moved to third on a single by C Luke Carlin before SS Doug Bernier grounded out to drive home the Indians first run. Indianapolis plated two more runs in the seventh inning to cut the Buffalo advantage to 4-3 on a run-scoring single by 1B Brian Myrow and a two-out RBI double by RF Brandon Jones.

Tribe RHP Mike Crotta (8.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) was saddled with his first Triple-A loss despite going an Indians' season-high eight innings and retiring the final 13 batters he faced. RHP Vinnie Chulk (1.0 IP, 1 SO) relieved Crotta and tossed a perfect ninth inning.

The Indianapolis offense was paced by Tabata (2-for-5, 2 SB) and Myrow (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), while only Hessman ( 2-for-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI) collected multiple hits for the Bisons.

The two teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. RHP Jeremy Powell is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis, while RHP R.A. Dickey is the probable starter for Buffalo.

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 1:40 p.m.
