Buffalo Bisons News Release
TODAY'S GAME: This afternoon, the Buffalo Bisons wrap up their season-opening eight-game roadtrip with the finale of a four-game set with the Richmond Braves from The Diamond (1:00 p.m.). Buffalo needs a win today to earn a split of their series with the R-Braves (1-2) and of their roadtrip (3-4). On the mound will be RHP Sean Smith. The righty allowed two runs on six hits in three innings of a no-decision against the Tides on Friday. Richmond will counter with RHP Jorge Campillo.
UNFAMILIAR FACE: With a 3-4 record, the Bisons are under the .500 mark for the first time since July 20, 2006 when they were 49-50 in manager Torey Lovullo's first season on the Buffalo Bisons. That streak stretched across 190 games. At no time last year were the Bisons below the .500 mark
.
HIT MACHINE: The hits keep coming for infielder Andy Gonzalez. He had two more doubles in last night's defeat. He is tied for the International League lead with a .500 (11-22) batting average, five doubles and six extra-base hits. Gonzalez also ranks second in the IL with a .577 on-base percentage and a .864 slugging percentage.
STRONG START: The Bisons have four players that have reached base in each game they've played. Josh Barfield has hit .357 with four walks to get on base in all seven of his games. Andy Gonzalez (.500, 4BB) and Ryan Mulhern (.238, 4BB) has reached safely in their six games while Jason Cooper has gotten on base in all four games he's played in (.182, 2BB).
FINALLY TAKEN DEEP: The Bisons pitching staff allowed their first home run of the season last night. Richmond's Joe Borchard hit a solo home run off Edward Mujica in the 7th inning. Borchard's homer took place in the 304th plate appearance against Bisons pitching this season.
CLOSE AS CAN BE: Bisons games have come right down to the final out so far in 2008. Six of the first seven games of the season have been decided by three runs or less. The only game with a larger margin of victory was Buffalo's 9-4 win over the Norfolk Tides on Opening Day (Thursday, April 3).
