Bisons Extinguish Chiefs in Series Finale
July 6, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost 5-1 to the Buffalo Bisons on Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Mark Teahen's single in the seventh inning to plate Chris Marrero accounted for the only run the Chiefs could muster against Bisons starting pitcher Jeurys Familia.
After two scoreless innings, Buffalo (44-45) took control of the contest with a three-run third inning. The pitcher Familia ignited the inning with an infield single off of John Lannan. Center fielder Matt den Dekker then followed with a well-hit single to right field. With the two runners on base and no one out, shortstop Josh Rodriguez crushed a three-run homer over the left-field fence to give Buffalo a 3-0 lead.
The Bisons added two more runs in the top of the sixth. First baseman Josh Satin led off with a single to center and moved into scoring position when right fielder Valentino Pascucci walked. Satin and Pascucci both scored on a two-run double to right from third baseman Oswaldo Navarro that put the visitors up 5-0. Lannan recovered to get the final two outs, but was finished for the night after the sixth. While the lefty matched his season high with six strikeouts, he was also touched for five runs on five hits and three walks.
On the offensive side, Syracuse (44-44) struggled against Familia. The 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic held the Chiefs without a run through six innings and fanned five batters in the process.
In the bottom of the seventh, though, Syracuse's bats finally came alive. First baseman Chris Marrero started the inning with a double to the warning track in left to become the first Chief to reach second base all night. The next batter, left fielder Mark Teahen, plated Marrero with a single to left-center to cut the Chiefs deficit to 5-1. Teahen, however, was thrown out at second attempting to leg out a double. Nevertheless, Familia exited at that point after 96 pitches and having allowed only five hits and one walk. His successor, Jenrry Mejia, retired the first two batters he faced to end the inning.
Atahualpa Severino pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Syracuse without surrendering a run and Pat Lehman tossed a no-hit, no-run ninth to keep the score at 5-1.
Although the Chiefs couldn't mount a comeback, third baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir picked up two hits and a walk, while making several impressive defensive plays. All-Star center fielder Corey Brown went hitless but walked once to reach base for the 27th consecutive game - the longest such current streak in the International League.
Syracuse will wrap up the first half of its season on the road with a two-game series in Pawtucket at 6:05. Right-hander Tanner Roark is slated to start for the Chiefs against Red Sox righty Zach Stewart.
