Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Allentown, PA - After dropping Thursday night's game and scoring just two runs, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees came back in a big way on Friday night to defeat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 8-1 in the series finale of a two game Yankee home stand at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsyvania.
The Yankees didn't waste anytime getting on the board on a Russell Branyan RBI single to right field, plating Corban Joseph and giving the Yankees the 1-0 lead. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre wasn't done in the first, as Francisco Cervelli hit a screaming grounder, which IronPig third basemen Pete Orr couldn't handle, allowing Ronnier Mustelier to score easily from third base. After Cervelli reached on the error, the Yankee failed to score again in the first.
The Yankees added one more in the home half of the second inning. Cole Garner roped a double, and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt down the third base line off the bat of Ramiro Pena who nearly legged out a bunt single. Garner then scored on a wild pitch from Lehigh Valley starting pitcher B.J. Rosenberg, extending the Yankee lead to 3-0 after two innings of play.
The IronPigs got one back in the top half of the third on an Andres Blanco RBI single. Michael Martinez scored easily on the Blanco single after a balk from Mike O'Connor sent Martinez from second to third. The Yankees bounced right back scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth, increasing their lead to 5-1. Cole Garner scored on a Ramiro Pena groundout to second base for the first run, while Corban Joseph absolutely destroyed a solo home run way over everything in right field. At Coca-Cola Park there is row a seats, then a patio area and above it are two rows of advertising boards. Joseph cleared everything and sent the ball sailing into the parking lot. Joseph's homer gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 5-1 advantage heading into the fifth inning.
Mustelier and Branyan roped back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth, swelling the Yankee lead to 7-1. Brandon Laird then roped a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Mustelier and cap the three-run bottom of the seventh and extend the Yankees lead to 8-1.
Mike O'Connor picked up the win for the Yankees improving to 2-3 on the season. The left-hander allowed just one run on seven hits over five innings, while striking out three. Rosenberg suffered the loss falling to 2-2 on the season. He allowed four runs, three earned, waliking two and striking three. Manny Delcarmen, Jason Bulger, and Juan Cedeno combined for the final four innings on the bump to win the game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
