Bisons' Cooper Named IL Batter of the Week

The International League today announced that Buffalo Bisons' OF Jason Cooper has been named the league's Batter of the Week for the period from July 30 - August 5.

Cooper, 26, pounded out nine extra-base hits during the week. Overall, he posted a .500 (14-28) batting average with four doubles, three triples, two home runs, seven RBI, six runs scored and a 1.071 slugging percentage. He also drew five walks for an impressive .576 on-base percentage and stole two bases in the first game of Friday's doubleheader in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Cooper's week began on Monday, July 30 when he tripled and drove in three against Syracuse. The next day he went a perfect 3-3 with two doubles, a home run and one RBI. Cooper homered again on Wednesday and collected two more multi-hit games on Thursday and in the first game of Friday's doubleheader. Saturday, Cooper propelled the Bisons to victory with the second of his two triples in the ninth inning of a 4-3 win against the Yanks.

On the season, Cooper is hitting .266 with 22 doubles, six triples, eight home runs and 41RBI. He's 1st on the team in triples and 2nd in doubles and extra-base hits (36).

Cooper began his Bisons' career with a late-season call-up in 2004 and was an integral part of the team's Governors' Cup Championship. He has played in 285 games with the Bisons, 11th most in the Modern Era. His 167 Bisons RBI rank 7th (3rd for a lefty and one ahead of manager Torey Lovullo). He is 9th in doubles (58) and T11th in home runs (38).

Cooper is the third member of the Bisons to win an IL weekly award this year. RHP Sean Smith (May 14-20) and INF Andy Marte (June 4-10) have also earned the honor in 2007.
