Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

A bloop single in the tenth inning gave the Buffalo Bisons an extra-inning victory over Pawtucket on a night where Pawtucket gave up a three run lead and could not cash in on a number of other opportunities to score runs late in the ballgame.

Michael Bowden picks up the loss for Pawtucket which snapped a quick, two-game winning streak. Fernando Martinez began the tenth inning with a double and was pinch run for but Fernando Perez. A sharp single to right field by Nick Evans put runners at first and third with nobody out. The corners were pulled in with Jesus Feliciano at-bat. His soft liner over the head of third baseman Hector Luna barely reached the outfield grass on the fly, but it fell for a base hit and proved to be the game-winning RBI.

The game, which lasted 3:44, was tied late because Buffalo scored three times in the sixth off Clevelan Santeliz who came out of the bullpen in relief of starting pitcher Brandon Duckworth. Santeliz could only get two outs, but allowed three hits and two walks which resulted in the three game tying runs.

Pawtucket's Brandon Duckworth did not record the victory for the first time in his last five starts despite allowing only one run. Duckworth exited with a 4-1 lead after pitching five innings, but Buffalo's comeback against the PawSox bullpen gave him a no-decision. In his last five starts Duckworth has allowed six earned runs in 28.1 IP- a 1.91 ERA.

In the top of the fourth inning Duckworth was able to dance out of trouble and allowed just one run despite loading the bases with a leadoff double and consecutive walks. He got first baseman Nick Evans to strikeout looking for the first out which held the runners. The next batter, Jesus Feliciano, flared a line drive up the middle that that was just beyond the reach of the outstretched Jose Iglesias and scored a run. With the bases still loaded Ruben Tejada lined out to Nate Spears at second base and catcher Raul Chavez followed with a groundout to second to end the inning.

Jed Lowrie reached base three times in the game going 2-for-3 with a walk. Lowrie flew out in his first at-bat, but singled to lead-off the fourth inning and turned on a chest-high fastball to rip it into the right field corner. Lowrie was in the lineup as the shortstop for the second time in what has been a three-game rehab assignment thus far. Monday night he played three innings at shortstop before being replaced by Jose Iglesias, but Thursday he played seven innings before being replaced by Brent Dlugach who struck out with runners on second and third and one out in the ninth inning.

The PawSox will host the Buffalo Bisons for the second of four games Friday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Pawtucket's starting pitcher in the matchup is Kevin Millwood (5-1, 4.12 ERA) and he will be opposed by Buffalo's Miguel Batista (1-0, 5.14 ERA).

Saturday August 6 will be the final free Youth Clinic of the season sponsored by Citizens Bank in association with ABC-6. From 2:00 - 3:15 p.m. manager Arnie Beyeler, pitching coach Rich Sauveur, hitting coach Chili Davis and a few select players will be on the field at McCoy Stadium to offer youngsters instruction on the game of baseball.
