Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY - It was another 10-run effort Wednesday night that propelled the Montgomery Biscuits (29-31) to a series victory over the visiting Carolina Mudcats (32-28), 10-2. After losing the first two games of the series by a total of three runs, the Biscuits offense exploded on Monday and never looked back.

It started in game three when the Biscuits' offense plated 11 runs on 11 hits. That performance was followed up by a season high 16 hits that scored 10 in game four and then another 10 hits produced 10 more runs in Wednesday's series finale.

All in all the Biscuits took the series 3-2, knocking 37 hits for 31 runs in the final three games. Before a crowd of 2,916 at Riverwalk Stadium Wednesday night, Montgomery got a solid seven innings of work from starter Richard De Los Santos. De Los Santos scattered five hits, struck out four, walked three and gave up just two earned runs. However, the offense was the story of the game, for the third consecutive evening.

Montgomery sent 11 batters to the plate in the sixth inning, scoring six runs on five hits. Ronnie Merril, Chris Nowak and Josh Asanovich each had two RBIs in the frame. The second baseman Asanovich made a couple of nice plays in the field and finished the night 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. Gaby Martinez and Sergio Pedroza both also scored twice for the Biscuits.

Derrell McCall took the loss for Carolina as he was slapped with nine hits and six runs (five earned) through four and 1/3 innings. The Mudcats starter also walked four and struck out two. Overall the Mudcats walked eight Biscuits hitters and the Carolina bullpen struggled mightly with their control.

The situation escalated in the sixth inning when Sergio Pedroza was hit-by-a-pitch for the second time in the ball game making a total of four hit Biscuits. Reliever Matt Yourkin was tossed from the game along with Mudcats Pitching Coach Scott Mitchell after Pedroza tasted his second pitch in as many innings. Yourkin was also responsible for knocking out Rhyne Hughes' front teeth with a pitch during the 2007 season.

Things settled down in the final innings as Montgomery cruised to victory by eight runs.

The Biscuits take their red hot offense to Birmingham for five games starting Thursday night. The Barons now six games up on Montgomery with just ten to go in the first half will look to hold off the charging Biscuits when action gets underway with left hander Mike Prochaska slated to take on fellow southpaw and Barons starter Clayton Richard. First pitch of the battle for I-65 is set for 7:05 Central Time.
