Mississippi Braves News Release
After losing the first three games of this series, the first eight games of the year and the last 11 games overall to the Birmingham Barons, the Mississippi Braves won their second straight over the Barons Wednesday night at Trustmark Park. The M-Braves closed out the first 10-game homestand of the season with two one-run wins over the Southern League South division's first-placed team.
The M-Braves fell behind in the first, but got out of what could've been a huge inning for the Barons. With the bases loaded, Cole Armstrong shot a single up the middle that brought Miguel Negron to the plate with the game's first run. Ricardo Nanita then shot a grounder up the middle and only a spectacular double play by JC Holt and Derrick Arnold got the M-Braves out of the jam.
Mississippi got on the board in the second. Van Pope and Greg Creek hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. They both moved up to third and second, respectively, when Creek's single was misplayed by Nanita. Kala Ka'aihue then singled to short bringing Pope to the plate. After a sac-bunt from Quentin Davis, Derrick Arnold shot a sac-fly to right to plate Creek for a 2-1, Mississippi lead.
The Barons came back to tie it up in the top of the third. Victor Mercedes led off with a double and he moved to third on a groundout by David Cook. With two outs in the inning, Armstrong struck again as he sent another single up the middle plating Mercedes to tie the score.
Jordan Schafer got his first home run of the season in the bottom of the inning to put the M-Braves back on top. Schafer shot a looping liner down the left field line for an opposite field home run. After three, Mississippi led 3-2.
The Braves added another run in the eighth when Pope singled and scored on a double off the center field wall by Ka'aihue. After eight, the M-Braves led 4-2.
Ka'aihue's error in the ninth put the tying run at second base in, but Matt Young's throw to the plate nailed Robert Valido with the second out of the inning. Sung Ki Jung then got a 4-3 groundout from Mercedes to end the game.
Jerome Gamble gave the M-Braves yet another quality start as he allowed only two runs on seven scattered hits through six innings of work. Mike Gonzalez threw another scoreless inning and Carlos Sencion tossed one scoreless frame. Sung Ki Jung gave up a run in the ninth, but held on to record his fourth save of the season.
Birmingham's Carlos Torres gave up three runs on eight hits through 6.2 innings and left the game trailing 3-2. Joe Torres came on in relief and struck out the only batter he faced in the seventh. Derek Rodriguez came on and gave up a run in the eighth.
The Braves head to Mobile, AL to take on the Mobile BayBears, the AA Southern League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in a five-game series starting Thursday night.
