Biscuits Wash Out BayBears
June 19, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY -- The Montgomery Biscuits (2-0, 37-35) received sterling performances from starters Chris Mason and Derek Feldkamp and clutch home runs from one expected source and one unexpected source to sweep a doubleheader in shutout fashion from the Mobile BayBears (0-2, 37-35), 1-0 and 8-0.
The BayBears collected only six total base hits in the two games. Montgomery pounded out three times as many.
Rained out a night earlier, the two squads waited through a two-hour, 46-minute rain delay to begin the first game of the doubleheader as well as the second half of the Southern League season.
Mason (9-3) was unfazed by the delay, allowing four base hits and one walk while striking out three over six superb innings to notch his Southern League-leading ninth win of the season.
Evan Longoria provided the game's only run, supplying a fourth inning blast to left-center against Mobile left-hander Greg Smith (3-3). Longoria leads the Southern League with 16 home runs and 50 runs scored.
Dale Thayer pitched a scoreless seventh for his fifteenth save of the season, one less than league leader Joey Devine of Mississippi.
In the second game, Feldkamp (2-5) turned in his second consecutive sharp outing. The BayBears managed only two hits off the right-hander out of Michigan, who fanned five while allowing only one runner past first base.
Five consecutive second inning singles for the Biscuits against Mobile starter Chris Kinsey (4-5) provided a quick three-run cushion for the home team. Rightfielder Shaun Cumberland, who would finish the game 2-for-2 with a walk, supplied the biggest blow with a two-run single.
Three innings later, Montgomery blew the game open. Jason Pridie led off with a double and Brooks Badeaux drew a walk. Reid Brignac lined out to centerfield, with Pridie tagging up and advancing to third. Kinsey walked Longoria on four pitches, but the fourth delivery escaped catcher Wilkin Castillo for a passed ball that scored . Pridie. Two batters later, Patrick Breen collected his first home run of the season, lashing a three-run shot to right-center for a 7-0 lead.
Nowak closed out the scoring an inning later with an RBI single off of reliever A.J. Shappi.
Relievers Brian Henderson and Evan Meek pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings respectively to nail down the doubleheader sweep.
Third baseman Longoria, who had gone 0-for-20 in a series at Mobile earlier in the season, finished the day a combined 4-for-6 with two singles, a double, a home run, two runs scored and two runs batted in.
The Biscuits and BayBears play the third game of the six-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Riverwalk Stadium. Montgomery is expected to start 21-year-old phenom Wade Davis against Mobile right-hander Esmerling Vasquez (4-4, 3.51).
